The UK Government has introduced a new scheme for nationals of certain middle eastern countries. The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is broadly for visitors who do not need a visa for short stays to the UK, or who do not already have a UK immigration status prior to travelling.
The scheme is open for nationals of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, who will now need an ETA to travel to the UK.
In general terms, a foreign national visiting the UK will have to obtain a visa beforehand. However some ‘non-visa nationals’ can turn up at the airport without a visa and can ask to be allowed in. Argentina, America and EU countries are non-visa national countries.
If your country is not on the list, you will not need a visa before you travel to the UK for a visit. Check here.
The Government has signalled that more non-visa nationals will come under the ETA scheme in the future. This will include European Union Nationals.
The Government says:
"We will confirm the timings in due course for when remaining eligible nationalities will need an ETA, and we will ensure they have sufficient time to prepare."
Individuals must travel using the same passport they used when they applied for an ETA.
